Thermal mass flow meter

A thermal mass flow meter is a device used to measure the mass flow rate of a gas or liquid. It operates based on the principle of heat transfer: it heats a sensor and measures how much heat is absorbed by the flowing medium. This absorption is proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid.

Overview

Thermal mass flow meter is primarily used in air and gas flow measurement applications. The meter consists of a transmitter and probe with temperature sensors (RTDs) located in the pins at the bottom of the probe. It is available with both insertion type and inline type design for smaller pipe size.

The thermal mass flow meter is widespread in industry and being used successfully in many applications with gas flow, for example:

  • Compress air (Consumption, distribution)
  • Carbon dioxide (for beverage production and chilling)
  • Argon (in steel production)
  • Nitrogen and oxygen
  • Natural gas (flor burners and boiler feed control)
  • Air & biogas measurement (wastewater plants)
